Speaking From the Heart: The Courage to Quiet the Mind
I remember sitting in meetings, nodding along while my mind raced with the perfect response I should give. My thoughts were loud, rehearsing, trying to get it right. But when I spoke, it felt flat—hollow somehow. I noticed that when I shared something heartfelt, people listened, tuned in, contemplated. Within my work this has become a guiding revelation : people don’t connect to polished words, they connect to presence, truth, and heart. It underpins connection to self - one of the four pillars of wisdom that are foundational in my therapeutic work.
So often, we live in our heads—analysing, problem-solving, striving to give correct or expected responses. And yet, beneath the chatter of the mind, there’s a deeper wisdom waiting to be heard: the voice of the heart. When we slow down enough to listen, this voice guides us with honesty, clarity, and courage. Speaking from the heart is not about abandoning logic; it’s about aligning logic with truth, so our words carry both meaning and authenticity.
How to Drop Into the Heart
Over time, I discovered that speaking from the heart is a practice—something we can nurture in everyday moments. Here are three ways to begin:
Pause and Breathe Into Your ChestThe next time you feel the urge to jump into a conversation, try pausing for just one slow breath. Place your attention on the center of your chest and imagine breathing directly into your heart space. That small pause interrupts the mind’s race and brings you back into presence. From here, your words often feel softer, truer, more grounded.
Feel Before You SpeakWhen asked a question, notice the impulse to answer quickly from the head. Instead, turn inward for a moment: What do I actually feel right now? Sometimes it’s uncertainty, sometimes it’s gratitude, sometimes it’s a clear yes or no. Letting that feeling rise first brings honesty to your response. Even a brief silence before you speak communicates authenticity.
Soften Your BodyThe mind’s chatter often shows up as tension in the body—the tight jaw, hunched shoulders, restless hands. Gently relaxing the body, especially when with others, opens space for the heart’s voice to be heard. In that openness, conversations shift. You’ll notice people responding not just to your words, but to the calm, safe presence you bring.
How to Listen to the Truth of Your Heart
Listening to your heart begins with trust. Unlike the mind, which speaks in constant commentary, the heart whispers. Its truth often arrives as a quiet knowing, a feeling in your body, or a sense of relief when you recognize what feels right. To listen, you must be willing to slow down.
Ask yourself gently: What feels true to me right now? Then notice the response. The mind may rush to argue, but the heart’s truth feels steady, calm, and unforced. It doesn’t need justification. Sometimes it shows up as warmth in the chest when something is right, or a tightening when something is off.
The more you practice, the clearer this inner compass becomes. And when you honor what your heart tells you—even in small ways—you begin to build a life and path that feel aligned, meaningful, and purposeful.
Why This Matters in Personal Relationships, Work and Business.
It’s easy to think heart-centered communication belongs only in personal relationships, but the opposite is true. In business, where pressure and performance can dominate, speaking from the heart can be revolutionary.
When we quiet the mental noise and lead with presence, stress softens. Decisions are made less from fear and more from integrity. Teams feel safer, more connected, more willing to share ideas. Clients and colleagues may forget the specifics of your pitch, but they will always remember how you made them feel.
The most impactful leaders I’ve met weren’t the ones with the flashiest strategies. They were the ones who spoke with warmth and clarity, whose words felt aligned with who they truly were. Heart-centered communication creates trust. It inspires loyalty. And it fuels purposeful action that lasts far beyond the meeting room.
Speaking from the heart is not weakness—it is a courageous act of internal leadership. It means daring to be real when it’s easier to hide behind polished words and ego led responses of wanting to be right. It means choosing connection over performance. And in doing so, you not only align with your own truth, but you invite others to do the same.
That’s where meaningful work begins. That’s where purpose takes root. And that’s where the path ahead becomes not just successful, but deeply fulfilling.
September's reflection: It is much easier to connect with our hearts in nature and around animals, in fact I feel the influence of these spirits really do help us into connecting with our hearts. Perhaps as in nature the bioenergetic field is more truthful, aligned, congruent and simpler without the complexities of thought, expectations, judgements etc.. and so we can drop in to this much easier.
The challenge is then how can this translate into every day within our human to human interactions? What wisdom are we so often bipassing that we experience when out in nature and how can we attune to this so that is can benefit our wider life? Can we can start to alleviate some of the sufferings of the mind of confusion, stress and anxiety as a physiological response to these? Not all people are made the same and through the work of Keirsey, Myers and Briggs our unique make up naturally brings us in to either gathering information through sesing or intuiting and making desisions through thinking or feeling, however I find it undeniable that the body holds a wisdom and within our elements of earth (gut flora, cell mitachondria), fire (nervous system), water (blood) and air ( breathing and respiration) the bio-energetic feedback informs the heart - our central chakra that calls us to hear its gentle, quiet leadership and to find the clarity that can guide us more elegantly.

Heart spiritual science
Modern research shows that the heart has its own complex nervous system, sometimes referred to as the "heart brain." This network of over 40,000 neurons communicates directly with the brain, sending signals that can influence emotions, perception, and decision-making. Through biochemical messengers such as hormones (like atrial natriuretic peptide) and neuropeptides, the heart regulates blood pressure, stress responses, and even moods. In fact, signals from the heart to the brain can shape clarity of thought and emotional balance, suggesting that wisdom doesn’t only come from the head but from that deeper part of us which can be connected with to inform our responses and using the mind as the tool for conversion.
From a spiritual perspective, traditions across cultures have seen the heart as the seat of consciousness. The four classical elements—earth, air, fire, and water—mirror its functions. Earth symbolizes the physical muscle, grounding us in the body. Air reflects the breath that fuels circulation. Fire represents the heart’s rhythmic electrical sparks, igniting life. Water embodies the flow of blood, carrying nourishment and connection throughout the body.
Science shows the heart informs decisions through neurochemistry, while spirituality reminds us it is also a symbol of unity, balance, and deeper knowing. When science and spirit meet, the heart emerges as both intelligent and sacred.
